Did you try and remove it via the bios? Try starting it up and while its loading hit "F10" (multi taps while its loading) and it will start in bios. I believe there is a option in there to remove the password. I'm in the middle of running a report (work) so I can't check and give you the steps at this time. The other way is like you said - open the case and pop out the little battery on the motherboard and put it back in.
