Okay. I have been seeing things like this on my news feed and it's starting to really irritate me. Why? Because if people would just do a few minutes of research on Google, they would know that they are in NO danger! You don't need to warn your kids. You don't need to copy and repost that warning!
Here is some info I am going to cut and paste from Hoax-Slayer:
Doing these steps will turn off email notices about this app, but it will not turn off the app.
On the "notifications" page you are making choices about the topics you want to be informed about. Unchecking those two named topics would let you less informed than with the checks. It's a hoax. :-) So don't worry, and please do not copy and paste to alllllllllll your friends pages. :-)
You have to actually 'check-in' (usually with your mobile phone) for the above actions to occur. Checking in is completely optional. Look under checking in... Link
THIS ONLY APPLIES IF YOU ARE ACCESSING WITH A MOBILE DEVICE. SEE HERE....
Also when you go uncheck the boxes as this tells you to, all you are doing is unchecking the email box. So it won't email you notifications when your friends use this feature. It's not turning anything off but the "email" feature for you.
Here is what I have recently posted on my own Facebook profile:
Facebook's new feature "Places" is nothing new, nor is it anything to be scared over. People can NOT just look up your location to then find you and murder you. You have to OPT-IN and then you choose who can see the information. (I posted this Aug 23rd but have just seen several messages on my news feed again so I thought I would repost!)
I have seen a few posts on my news feed walking you through 'unchecking the two boxes in your notification settings'. Just because it is checked to notify you, doesn't mean that you have the application and the notification would be to you and not to anyone else anyway. If this was an opt-OUT type thing, the place you would need to go is not notifications, but rather application settings (which until you opt-IN, you won't see the application listed). Besides, this really isn't anything new, as people have been using Foursquare for awhile now and this is basically just like that.
Personally, this is just another one of those posts I see on my news feed telling me to block a group or person and to copy and post the info. 99% of them are hoaxes anyway and only meant to get people riled up. I personally think the people at MySpace are behind all of this stuff
CNN Story
FOX Story
And MSNBC Story
Either way...it could be a useful tool and it's nothing as scary as many people are being led to believe by the latest rash of status updates. You have to opt-in, you choose who can see your location, at each location you have the option of checking in (or NOT), and it's for mobile Facebook users so the people using laptops or desktops aren't included. Yes, privacy has been an issue with Facebook, but again, you have to opt-in to this service. So until you add the application, your account will NOT be linked to 'Places' and you have nothing to worry about. Just because it's listed in Notifications does NOT mean that your account has 'Places' installed. Please...let your friends know if they post something. Bookmark one of the links. Tell them to Google it and get the facts, but help stop this before it gets out of hand!
So, yes, Places can zero in on an exact location. But:
I'm sorry if I seem 'moody', but I am irritated at the fact people are CHOOSING to spread misinformation because they couldn't be bothered by doing a bit of research. It's not hard. Go to Google and search! 99% of the time, if something shows up on your news feed on Facebook that suggests that you should copy and post to share with all of your friends...it is a HOAX or misinformation! This could be cured if people weren't so gullible! I can appreciate that everyone that posts this stuff is probably just trying to look out for their friends, but come on! Be responsible! I personally have my own rule for Facebook...I will NOT repost ANYTHING unless I can verify that it's true. I refuse to pass along a hoax or misinformation because THAT is what looking out for my friends really is.
So, go on, warn your children...but chances are, they have already heard that this app is not as spooky scary as everyone is letting on.
