So did anyone rush out to purchase a iPad or at the very least check one out and play with one? I'll admit I didn't rush out to check it out but I have been reading the reviews. I am interested in the whole tablet computing and I think we will see this year many different options and that they will revolve.
Remember when the first iPhone came out? It wasn't that long after that there was a new updated model leaving folks who just purchased their iPhones stuck. I think I will give tablets a good year before I really look into making a purchase.
So just my observation on reading that I don't care about with the ipad. First there is NO USB port. This I think by far is the worst issue. I mean the larges iPad I could purchase is a 64GB so with no USB there is no way for me to plug in a flashdrive or a external. I really don't get the skipping that feature.
NO built in camera or webcam? Come on with all that money can't you add that atleast? I mean your iphones already have it so why not the ipads?
Another thing that bothers me greatly is that the screen is glass. OK lets face it how many times have you dropped your cell phone or a book? Glass....really?? I know that plastic screens are also used by other manufactures and work fine. I will say that Gizmodo did a flowchart on just the glass screen of the ipad that made me laugh:
Like I said I think I'll wait till the other manufactures release their tablets to make a decision. I think once they are released you will see new versions of the ipad come out with more features and possibly at a lower price.
I would love to hear from a new ipad owner on what they like or what disapointed them.
Somewhere I read that the cheapest app is going to be $4.99 and I agree that is too much per app. I'm guessing that is so that apple can have their %. I'm pretty sure you will be able to jailbreak it as you know they will work their powers on that. I dunno the no USB and the screen is what kills me plus like you said the price - yikes. Dropping a small piece of glass tends to bounce more then a large one. I've dropped a 8x10 picture frame (close in size) and they don't bounce at all.
I thought this was good and made some valid points and in the end is a funny read
But with the iPad, it seems like Apple's model customer is that same stupid stereotype of a technophobic, timid, scatterbrained mother as appears in a billion renditions of "that's too complicated for my mom" (listen to the pundits extol the virtues of the iPad and time how long it takes for them to explain that here, finally, is something that isn't too complicated for their poor old mothers).
The model of interaction with the iPad is to be a "consumer," what William Gibson memorably described as "something the size of a baby hippo, the color of a week-old boiled potato, that lives by itself, in the dark, in a double-wide on the outskirts of Topeka. It's covered with eyes and it sweats constantly. The sweat runs into those eyes and makes them sting. It has no mouth... no genitals, and can only express its mute extremes of murderous rage and infantile desire by changing the channels on a universal remote."

I was totally over it until I started reading reviews. It does sound cool. If it gets jailbroken it will be even more tempting. However what will end up keeping me from buying one is the money. Not the cost of the device but everything else. All of the apps are going to cost more as I understand it. Umm, and why? It's a giant iPhone. I read that ABC wants to make old tv episodes a subscription or pay per view. Umm, why? I can go to ABC.com/Lost and watch all day long from my computer. Why would I pay to do so from my couch. I hate being nickled and dimed to death. Just let me use it like a laptop or netbook and quit all this squeezing of pennies from my checkbook.
Also as SM mentioned there is the giant breakable screen. Ive dropped my iPhone tons of times. The last thing I need is to give the ground a bigger target.
