So what are your thoughts on gay high schoolers going to prom? Well a school in Missippi told a high school lesbian, Constance McMillen that she could not attend the prom with her girlfriend. She was allowed to attend with a male date or alone but not as a couple with her girlfriend. She then asked if she could wear a tux and was told no that she had to wear a dress. Well the issue didn't stop there but it went in front of a federal judge, the NY Times posted the rulings
A Mississippi school board was grossly discriminatory and mean-spirited when it told Constance McMillen that she could not attend her high school prom with her girlfriend. A ruling by a federal judge that Ms. McMillen’s constitutional rights had been violated is a welcome sign that gay people are continuing to make progress toward equality. It should also be a warning to school districts nationwide about the cost of discrimination.
Ms. McMillen, a senior at Itawamba Agricultural High School, has identified herself as a lesbian since the eighth grade. After the school learned that she was planning to take her girlfriend to the prom, it told her that the two could attend alone or with male dates but not as a couple. When Ms. McMillen asked if she could wear a tuxedo, she was told that she would have to wear a dress.
The American Civil Liberties Union wrote a letter protesting those decisions and the district responded by canceling the prom. It was a move that called to mind the school districts across the South that canceled their proms during the civil rights era rather than open them to black and white students on an equal basis. The A.C.L.U. sued on Ms. McMillen’s behalf.
So what did the school do? They canceled prom. Now none of those kids will have the memories of their senior prom, how sad is that. Not to mention that how many kids are going to now blame the girl for ruining their prom?
Here is Constance McMillen on the Ellen Show telling her story
What are your thoughts on this? Was the school right in canceling the prom? Do you agree or disagree with the judges ruling?
I agree. The schools need to be more worried about security and education. I found this story sad. I hope the kids all got together and had a great time anyways.
Totally absurd, how unfair to ruin everyone elses night too..
The school district is dumb. Although I bet a bunch of parents are not secretly happy. No teen sex, no expensive attire. No booze fueled evening. I'd hire her to attend my daughter's prom to get it cancelled.
But seriously. This is so dumb. I'm glad the courts did the right thing and slapped them with this ruling. Equal rights aren't just for some. They are for all.
The AP reported this last night on the story
JACKSON, Miss. – A rural school district that canceled its prom rather than allow a lesbian student to attend with her girlfriend has agreed to pay $35,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit the ACLU filed on her behalf.
The district also agreed to follow a non-discrimination policy as part of the settlement, though it argues such a policy was already in place.
Constance McMillen, 18, said the victory came at the price of her being shunned in her small hometown of Fulton.
"I knew it was a good cause, but sometimes it really got to me. I knew it would change things for others in the future and I kept going and I kept pushing," McMillen said in an interview Tuesday.
I say good for her!!!
Hey I'm all up for watching 2 chicks make out.
I find it absolutely disturbing that it is 2010 and we as people still discriminate against anybody. it is such a medeival mind set to act like homosexuality is such a shocker. Love is all that matters, in a world full of corruption and war we should be so happy to find happiness.
