If you have a restore file goto step 2

1. Download a restore file make sure it ends in .ispw there are alot out there that work ! Now if you ended up restoring to 2.x or anything lower than 3.1.2 you can hook up to iTunes after you restore and upgrade to 3.1.2

2. Launch iTunes and shift-click on the Restore button (option click for Mac users). Then browse to the restore file you downloaded or had saved and let iTunes do the rest.

Note: If you find a custom restore file you can also Jailbreak this way ! But you never know what your going to get it you get someone elses restore file so save your own !
