I'm doing a software update dance this morning! Downloaded the 3.0 update for the iPhone last night and it's fantastic! Only thing missing is the MMS but I'm telling myself we must have patience...Zen thought for the day.
But I digress- The free new update makes the iPhone experience even better than before. From the long-awaited copy & paste to Voice memos, the iPhone just got a little bit better. And it already rocked!
Here's a few tips & tricks to get you started on your path to 3.0 bliss...
The new update has some features you may not even be aware of such as shaking your phone to undo typing.
That's right! If you're typing up mail, notes, text, or in the Safari app, you can simply shake your phone and a little pop-up will come up with the option to "Undo Typing".
Unlimited apps installed.
There are now 11 pages to fit all your apps in vs the previous 9. And, as long as you have the storage space, you can have as many as you'd like and all the ones that do not fit on the pages will just be "hidden". No icons but you can access via the new Spotlight feature (more on that to come..)
Removing only some parts of a conversation.
Previously you could only had the option of deleting entire text conversations. Now the update has given us an Edit button which can be found on the top right-hand side while inside a conversation. It gives you the option to remove individual text and there's a "Forward" option at the bottom.
New Characters on the keyboard.
Now when you hold down certain signs, new characters appear. One example- when you hold down the "." you'll also see this option- "..."
More "hidden" stuff can be found here.
And a few tips to help you navigate your way around...
Voice Memo
When your download is complete you will see a brand new app button appear on your screen. The picture is of a microphone. Tap on it and you can record a message that you can then email to your friends, loved ones, or that crazy ex-friend/partner you've been meaning to tell off but didn't want to speak to. Fun! You can also trim the message to get rid of any dead air at the ends. These messages will sync to iTunes.
Copy and paste
Yes folks, copy and paste is finally here! You can at last copy text and paste it elsewhere. This feature was sorely missing from the iPhone and we have been anxiously waiting for it. If lets say you want to copy a link someone texted you to paste elsewhere, double tap on the screen and copy away! Ah let the good times roll.
(yes this was an actual "conversation" I was having...go ahead and laugh )
Quick Spotlight
You can reach this feature easily by swiping to right. (So this feature is on the left of the iPhone's home screen). What's it for? Well it's a great little feature if you have pages and pages worth of apps, and you don't want to go through each one searching for one in particular. When you're on this page there will be a search field on top and the onscreen keyboard at the bottom. Start typing in the search term and results will start appearing on the screen. Then tap on correct result to open. It's a time-saver! You can configure it to search or ignore certain items too by going to:
Settings > General > Home > Search Results
Shake to Shuffle
A feature previously found on certain version of the iPods, you can now shake the iPhone to shuffle top the next song in your iPod app. Sort of like an Etch-A-Sketch! It can be done anytime the iPod controls are on the screen. I probably won't use this much as I am the most accident prone person ever, and can just see my phone flying out of my hand and smashing into someone's head. Or even worse, a wall or floor. *lol*
This is only the tip of the iceberg! There are more tips to be found here.
i agree...definitely made me feel better about not being able to get the new phone..
what's the weather app called?
Weatheralert
Woo. I was awaiting your review so I could throw out a few comments of my own.
First, YAY!!!!!!
Now that I got that out of my system, here are the things I've observed:
The voice app is pretty cool, though I don't see myself using it very much... Still, its something that seems pretty basic and is good to have!
I LOVE the landscape texting. Love love love. Love. Yes. Haha. It might be the best part of the update for me (until MMS shows up.)
Copy and paste is cool and easy to use.
I'm with you with the whole "shake to shuffle" deal. I don't need to be throwing my phone off anywhere.
The best feature yet I hope will be the push for apps. I just downloaded a weather app that is suppose to bring up a message when there is a weather alert. I hope one will come out that will play a loud noise, so you could have a weather radio when you need it. I look forward to seeing what other apps will make use of it.
The search is okay, but I don't see myself using it much either. I'm too used to just looking up my contacts... Maybe if I wanted to find a song quickly.
All in all, this has been a wonderful update for those of us (me and MIW) too poor to break our current contracts and buy the new phone. I shall happily wait for MMS next and then for the next new iPhone to score on!
