Spring/Summer Gadgets

6 replies [Last post]

I was hoping to see if anyone here at GD has purchased or tested out any of the new handheld UV detection monitors?

My daughter who is 11 was just diagnosed with photosensitivity. Which I am sure will be a big issue this summer. She has always had quick sun exposure reaction but this year (while away at winter snow camp and outside temperatures as low as 12 degrees) the reflection of uv rays from the snow caused serious burn lesions on her face along with very very burned and blistered lips. I took her to her pediatrician and yep, sure enough she was diagnosed with this skin disease.

I am also asking if anyone has a really good high uv level sunscreen that contains Titanium Dioxide? I have found a few but they also contain other ingredients which are known to to be a photosensitive irritant.

I have also seen umbrellas that offer UV reflection.. I have yet to re-google this but if you use one that works well I would love it if you can share what brand and an aproximate cost

We are lucky to live in So. California so summers are pretty mild but not looking forward to having to put a "lid" on her outside playtime, swimming and beach fun Sad

Re: Spring/Summer Gadgets

Awww green I'm sorry about the little one.

Since I live in Sunny south Florida and I'm fair skinned plus having to deal with skin cancer many times over. Now I dont have a issue with photosensativity but I do tend to be ultra sensative as far as products go. Alot of sunscreens I can not use - they simply give me a almost chemical type of burn. Here is what I found works for me. For daily use I use Lubriderm daily moisture with spf 15, I like it because it doesn't go on greesy like sunscreens do and its a nice moisturizer. For sunscreen I have tried many brands that like I said have left me with a chemical type of burn (again very sensitive skin) and the one I use that works for me (and lasts) is Coppertone Kids. I did look and it does not have Titanium Dioxide.

I googled and I did find that Burts Bees does make a natural Chemical -free sunscreen that has Titanium Dioxide. Now I have never tried it (I will check it out now) but I have used other Burts Bees products and loved them. You can see the sunscreen here:

High protection from the sun's harmful rays, naturally.

How it Works

This 100% natural, non-whitening formula provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and helps keep skin hydrated without using chemical sunscreen actives like octinoxate and oxybenzone. Instead, titanium dioxide, a naturally-occurring mineral creates a micro-fine barrier on your skin to reflect the sun's harmful rays. Our natural sunscreen is effective immediately upon application and safe for kids

Ingredients: Active ingredient: titanium dioxide (8.58%)
Inactive Ingredients: water, cannabis sativa (hemp) seed oil, glycerin, stearic acid, fragrance, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, hydrated silica, sucrose distearate, calendula officinalis (calendula) flower extract, crataegus oxyacanthus (hawthorn) stem extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) extract, hydrastis canadensis (golden seal) extract, symphtum officinale (comfrey) extract, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, alginic acid, acacia senegal gum, xanthan gum, beta carotene, sucrose stearate, lecithinlecithin for fat-loss and lowering cholesterol., aluminium hydroxide, sodium borate, glucose, sodium chloride, canola oil, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidase

Thanks for the recomendation of a daily moisturizer with sunscreen. She needs to use one and I have no idea where to start. I have a feeling this area might be a bit difficult since she is at the age of break outs she tends to have oily skin like most 11-12 year olds begin to experience.

I will look into this sunscreen and compare its ingredients with the "do not use" list from her dermatologist Smile

Re: Spring/Summer Gadgets

I have tried a few dozen moisturizers and by far I found the Lubriderm to be the most non-greasy and non pore clogging one out there. I use it on my face also and under my makeup. I really like it alot. It says on the bottle developed by dermatologist. I've use the high end products that cost alot but in the end I didn't like how they felt compaired to this. Give it a shot and hey if she doesn't like it then what your only out 6-7 bucks.

They also make a UV spray you can buy for clothes. I've never used it but heard it works well. Here is one site that sells it
