My daughter is busting my chops to get her a netbook for school. If kids need computers in school why don't schools then give them one. What should I be looking for? What is the difference between netbooks and laptops, what should I look for? She is pretty good in school. Oh and she said she needs a Thumb DriveThumb Drive. What the hell is a Thumb DriveThumb Drive?

hi gunslinger, a Thumb DriveThumb Drive is the same thing as a Flash DriveFlash Drive. you can get those anywhere and they are pretty cheap. i generally always have one on my keychain. they come in different sizes and style. i love my little Flash DriveFlash Drive, its really cute. check out office depot they have the cutest ones. this is my Flash DriveFlash Drive, mine is the purple one in the middle

netbooks and laptops are similar is ways. netbooks are generally much smaller and can fit easy into backpacks and some purses. you can also get some really cute netbooks in fun colors. the downside is generally you give up the cd player and they have smaller hard drives. if you get a netbook make sure its a windows base one and not a linux one. laptops are larger and with larger ones you get more features. its really just a matter or what she wants and needs and your budget.

Love the Flash DrivesFlash Drives Autumn. I also always have a flash or two in my purse. I use them for work all the time transferring from one PC to another or doing something. I would say gunslinger get her a 4gb flash and that should be good.
Autumn was also right on it all depends what she is looking for as far and a netbook or a laptop. You will get more use out of a laptop but it is larger. Kids (especially girls) in high school love netbooks so I dunno.

NO cd player? How do you put games on it or what ever kids do? I'll have to go talking to her and take her shopping I guess to look around. If I get something I know they have extended warranties, are they worth it. I think Best BuyBest Buy has that geek squad protection plan.

Re: Netbook for highschool student?

The good thing about a netbook is the are very easy to travel with and you can buy a nice one for about $120 or so I prefer the Acer One !

I say get a Netbook with and extrenal Monitor out hook up also
Most don't have CD/DVD drives , but you can purchase a usb CD/dvd drive for less Than $60

I also suggust a USB mouse because the touch pad is so small about $20

Dell and HP netbooks really are not worth getting at this point !

Acer Netbooks have GREAT wifi cards very fast and reliable !

Flash DrivesFlash Drives Vary I prefer to use a Micro SD card reader as my flash drive
Kingston FCR-MRG2 USB microSD High Capacity Card Reader here is another style SanDisk 8GB Mobile Ultra microSDHC, Class 4

I bought mine with all the stuff show below for $19 at Frys electronics ( 8gb is what mine is )
Kingston 8GB Micro SDHC Card with Adapters and USB Reader

So if you bought everything i suggusted you would spend about $220
and have a great starting point for a college or highschool student !

If you buy online you would add shipping !
